Nha Trang: Po Nagar, mud baths and Long Son

  1. 08:30Po Nagar Cham Towers — cooler and quieter earlier.
  2. 09:45Hon Chong stone garden — bay views.
  3. 11:00Mud baths at Thap Ba or I-Resort — mineral baths and pools.
  4. 15:00Long Son Pagoda, White Buddha — city panorama, dress code.
  5. 16:30Cathedral — Gothic in the centre; dinner and Vietnamese coffee.

Do mud baths before lunch. Cover shoulders and knees at temples. The White Buddha means a long staircase.

This day is about the city and a proper soak: temples, bay views, and mineral mud. You can run it yourselves on Grab or a scooter — no package tour needed. It is a packed route, so bring water, a hat, and a change of clothes for the mud baths.

Below is the stop order, what to pack, and what to check before buying mud-bath tickets.

Morning: Po Nagar Cham Towers

Tháp Bà Ponagar is one of Nha Trang’s main historic landmarks: Cham brick towers on a hill above the Cai River, north of the centre.

Go early: less heat, fewer people. 45–90 minutes is usually enough.

Practical notes:

  • Paid entry at the gate (tens of thousands of dong as a ballpark — confirm at the ticket desk)
  • It is an active shrine: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering the towers; wraps are often provided if needed
  • No flash during prayers; do not touch offerings

From here, Hon Chong or the mud complexes in the Po Nagar area are a short hop.

Hon Chong stone garden

Hòn Chồng is rocks by the water and viewpoints over the bay. A short photo stop — usually 30–45 minutes.

It sits well between Po Nagar and the mud baths: both areas are north / northeast of the centre, with a short Grab between them.

Mud baths: Thap Ba or I-Resort

Two complexes independent travelers use most:

  • Thap Ba Hot Spring / Mud Bath — more classic and local, often cheaper; near the Po Nagar area
  • I-Resort — more modern resort feel, more pools and photo spots; also about 10–15 minutes from the centre by Grab

Both usually run from morning into late afternoon (Thap Ba often until ~17:00–18:00, I-Resort around ~17:30 — confirm on the day). Buy tickets on site or ahead via aggregators like Trip.com / local sellers — useful for comparing packages (shared mud, mineral pool, VIP).

Tips:

  • Arrive before lunch — quieter than after 11:00–12:00
  • Swimsuit, flip-flops, waterproof phone pouch
  • After the mud — showers and mineral pools; do not plan a dressy outing without a change of clothes

Budget 2–3 hours if you want to linger.

Long Son Pagoda and the White Buddha

Chùa Long Sơn is known for the huge white Buddha on the hill. From the platform you get a city panorama.

Important:

  • A long staircase — bring water and take it slow; heat makes it harder than it looks from below
  • Temple dress code: shoulders and knees covered
  • Keep it calm — this is an active pagoda, not only a viewpoint

Plan about 45–60 minutes including the climb and photos.

The cathedral

Nha Trang Cathedral (Nhà thờ Núi) is the recognizable neo-Gothic landmark in the centre — a good late-afternoon stop when the heat drops.

A short look outside / inside (if open to visitors), then dinner in town. The cathedral is also on our places map with other sights.

Dinner and Vietnamese coffee

After a packed day, keep dinner and coffee simple — no new marathons. Browse cafes and restaurants on our places map near your hotel or the centre.

Getting between stops

The whole day works fine on Grab / Maxim: Po Nagar → Hon Chong → mud baths → Long Son → cathedral. A scooter works if you already ride confidently in Vietnam; otherwise a car is calmer after heat and stairs.

Do not try to add islands on the same day — the route is already full.

Checklist

  1. Early start at Po Nagar
  2. Hon Chong — short stop for views
  3. Mud baths before the midday rush (Thap Ba or I-Resort)
  4. Swimsuit and a change of clothes
  5. Long Son — water and covered clothing for the stairs
  6. Cathedral toward evening
  7. Dinner and coffee — cafes and restaurants map

This day pairs well with sea and theme-park days: culture in the morning, mineral soak midday, city rhythm in the evening without overload.
